emergent geographies

Emergent geographies explores the connexion between two developing territories which from their original peripheral situation in the European and global context are becoming centralized within the contemporary redefinition of the relations between technology, creativity and society.

On the one hand, Extremadura, a geographic region in the South Eastern corner of the continent, is the world pioneer in the migration to free software, with the development & implementation of the operating system Linux. On the other, Latvia, a Soviet ex-republic in the Baltic Sea, where they have succeeded in converting enormous techno-military facilities from the Cold War for their civil and artistic use.

Emergent geographies investigates the potential of a cultural interchange between Extremadura and Latvia in this context: emancipatory, global, fluid, mechanic, futuristic.
